Sad childrens' fiction

Beth dying in Little Women is sad, but the part of The Golden Road by L.M. Montgomery where The Story Girl refuses to tell Cecily's fortune and then gives in with "Everybody you meet will love you as long as you live" wrecked me repeatedly when I was a kid. (Then it gets ruined by Bev's corny Wonder-Years-but-make-it-Edwardian narration. Bro, you are literally the only person here asking "How could Sara have known tuberculosis was deadly?")
