In the early 1400s, Edward, Duke of York wrote a hunting and game guide that included a list of over a thousand "names for all manner of hounds."

Some good ones:

Cachefaste
Honeydewe
Symfonye
Garlik
Christabell
Terry
Havegoodday
Lewde
Rage
Crabbe
Beste-of-all
Pretyman
Pretiboy
Joliboye
Mercurye
Oribull
Brente

My favourite name is Streccheforthe, suggested for greyhounds, because it shows that people are alike no matter what the time period is: "Who's a long boi? You're a long boi!"

Medieval England: At least 25% of men are named William, John, or Richard, 50-70% have names that are among the top ten most popular.

Also medieval England: Here, have a list of 1000 dog names so you can keep track of your good boys.

@erinbee this is such a rich text

“Lewde” for masto

“Brente” preconceiving Twitter 13/10

Boys both Joli- and Preti-, and their pall “Pretyman”

“Oribull”

“Rage” proving there’s always That Guy with the dog with the spikey collar

@sexybenfranklin Mercurye is what she seasons her cooking with when she doesn't like you.

@erinbee Surely the quintessential ye olde dog’s name would be Nosewise.

@Anke They're all good hounds, but especially Brente

@erinbee I don’t care what period of history we’re taliking about; Lusty is not a good dog name. 👎

@erinbee these are so wonderful. For some reason I find 'Terry' is making me laugh the most. All those inventive names, and then Terry.

@GwenfarsGarden Terry cracked me up too, it's such a Canadian or Australian Dad name.

@erinbee funnily enough, I think of Terry as an English name!

@erinbee some gems:
Bonere (54)
Dedde (204)
Litillwitte (383)
Wellyfedde (700)
Baby (747)
Brayneles (770) - "brainless"
Harde-ynowgh (846)
Lumpe (887)
Soneforgete (993)
Wrecche (1126)

@nev @erinbee Wrecche, cause they Wrecche'd the sofa again

@nev @erinbee I mentioned "Picarde" (502) out loud and Lursa, who was on my lap, perked up suddenly.

@erinbee It sold for £198,400, or less than £200 per doggo.

@erinbee new historically accurate fursonas just dropped

@webweaver "Here be my hounds, Pretyman, Pretiboye, and...down! Down, Lewde!"
